Saigon, lost in translation – Vietnam part 1

Vietnam was not particularly in our top ten « countries » to visit. We love the food but we were afraid to find the country too similar to China. For professional reasons, David had to spend at least two weeks in Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh). Well, we could not miss the opportunity to spend also some time for traveling, visiting, discovering and of course, eating !
Le Vietnam ne faisait pas forcément partie de notre top dix des pays à visiter. On adore sa cuisine, mais on avait peur d’y retrouver quelque chose de trop similaire à la Chine. Pour des raisons professionnelles, David devait passer au moins deux semaines à Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh). On ne pouvait pas passer à côté l’occasion d’y rester un peu pour voyager, visiter, découvrir et bien sûr manger !

We have heard lots of different things about Vietman, some good, some not so exciting. Are Vietnamese people friendly or not ? How can we communicate if we can’t speak the language ? Is food really good or kind of the same everywhere ?
On avait entendu des bons et moins bons échos sur le Vietnam. Est ce que les vietnamiens sont chaleureux ou pas ? Comment se débrouiller si on ne parle pas la langue ? Est ce qu’on y mange vraiment bien ou c’est un peu toujours la même chose ?

David spent the first two weeks in a residential neighborhood of Saigon, far from the city centre and the touristic places. And, it was probably the highlight of this trip for him (except for the fact that his beloved wife was not with him, OF COURSE !). He was right in the middle of the Vietnamese life and found people so open-minded, curious and always smiling. He spent some really good time with them, was invited to play badminton, for dinners, drinks and night out, without being asked anything else in return. Just some curiosity and sharing. And that’s just exactly what we are looking for when we travel.
David a passé les deux premières semaines dans un quartier résidentiel de Saigon, loin du centre ville et des endroits touristiques. C’était probablement la meilleure expérience de ce voyage pour lui (mis à part le fait que sa femme chérie n’était pas avec lui, BIEN SUR !). Il était juste au milieu de la vie vietnamienne et a rencontré des gens ouverts, curieux et toujours souriants. Il a été invité à jouer au badminton, à partager des repas, verres avec eux, sans qu’on attende quelque chose de lui en retour. Juste de la curiosité et du partage. Et c’est exactement ce que nous recherchons dans nos voyages.
