Today on September 15th 2016, Asians celebrate mid-autumn festival ! Then, it is tradition to give mooncakes to your relatives. We won’t explain you the whole story behind this, you can find it easily on Internet. But we just wanted to talk about our experience in Singapore, a few weeks before the festival.

At first, we didn’t quite understand why our friend Lesley was so excited to be in Singapore during this period. For us, nothing fantastic, we just eat mooncakes sometimes, simple red beans mooncakes. When we arrived at the Takashimaya shopping mall, we realized how crazy Singaporeans were about mooncakes.

There were at least 60 mooncakes stalls at the same place. It was 9pm and yet crowded. All the big hotels and famous asian bakeries were selling all kind of mooncakes : white lotus seeds with/without egg yolk, iced snow skin, sesame, matcha tea, chocolate with Dark Vador face, champagne truffle… Then, how to choose the good ones ??

Some brands / hotels are quite famous for their mooncakes, and you can tell from the prices : 60 euros for a box of 4. We honestly found that overrated. After multiple tastings, they were more or less the same (except for the snow skin mooncakes that are quite good). Obviously, we (Audrey) fell into this marketing trap : the nice packaging. We have to admit, some of the boxes are really beautiful and make perfect gifts to bring back home !

Next step : bake homemade mooncakes !
